Oerol 2019 vision & mission
Attention! You cannot book with us for Oerol in 2022.
Every year for ten days, the island of Terschelling turns into one big stage for Theater, Dance, Pop-up performances, Spoken Word, Visual Arts, Science, Research and Live music. Next Friday, June 14, the time has come!
Many performances are often made on site for the locations, or adapted accordingly. In ten days Oerol on Terschelling offers the program that an average theater would take an entire season. With more than 50,000 visitors, Oerol is the largest festival for location arts in Europe. And we are there with the sailing ships of Noordvaarder Zeilreizen! You too?
In addition to many premieres, experimental performances and upcoming talent, Oerol also offers room for reflection. The natural environment of the island with wide beaches, the dune landscape and a lot of forest helps with this. But inspiration also comes spontaneously in the shed, on the dike, in a tent on the festival grounds, simply on the street or on board! Wherever you look, beautiful, strange or amazing things happen all around you.
The often heard slip of words “on Oerol” instead of “on Terschelling” indicates that Oerol has been given the function of a place. In 2019, Oerol will tilt the perspectives.
Oerol this year shows the vistas, the perspectives of the makers, and also their concerns and hopes for the future. A world in which you are challenged to examine your own insights. A temporary society in which every participant counts and wonder is central.
During Oerol 2019, more than 30 performances will have their (world) premiere. In addition to a highly innovative range of Theater, Pop-up performances and Expeditions, music from all over the world can be heard. New this year include the Secret Garden Sessions. This concert series with neo-classical music by Dutch and foreign artists takes place in the idyllic setting of Zelfpluktuin Groenhof. The whole of Oerol Talks offers space for reflection for both makers and visitors. The art form ghosts also gets its own place in various parts of the programming.
Oerol 2019: Tilting landscape
The focus is on the search of hundreds of artists who find space on the island of Terschelling to research, create and present. The shared fascination of makers and audience for this place as a stage forms the basis of the collective experience that Oerol is. The audience is invited to step into the tilting landscape of Oerol in an adventurous, open way.
A visit to Oerol is an expedition: you travel there, you are willing to investigate and start an active search.
