Brandarisrace, een uniek spektakel

Brandaris race, a unique spectacle!

What is the Brandaris Race? The Brandarisrace is an annual sailing competition with 70 to 80 traditional sailing ships, from Harlingen to the island of Terschelling on the Wadden Sea. Organizer Herman Brandsma is the old owner of our beautiful clipper the Noordvaarder.

Why is the sailing competition called Brandarisrace?

The sailing competition is named after the famous lighthouse of Terschelling, the Brandaris!

When does the sailing competition take place?

The zwil contest takes place annually on the third weekend of October. This year for the 26th time on October 19 and 20.

Do I need sailing experience?

No !! Sailing experience is not necessary. Our sailing ships have an experienced skipper and crew who will teach you all the tricks and tips you need to sail the sailing ship quickly and safely.

What does the weekend with the Brandaris race to Terschelling look like?

Friday evening:
At 20:00 you board the sailing ship in Harlingen. The skipper and crew will welcome you and you will meet the rest of the group. Harlingen offers good nightlife on Friday evenings, but you can of course also stay on board together.

Saturday:
You sleep on the ship in Harlingen and the next morning breakfast is served in the cozy lounge. After breakfast there is a short sailing instruction and an assignment of tasks and teams on deck. All ships leave the port of Harlingen, because they start outside the port of Harlingen. All ships compete with each other on their way to the island of Terschelling. The finish is in front of the island. Since the sailing competition does not last all day, this offers the opportunity to discover the island in the afternoon, rent a bicycle or just take a walk. At the end of the day, after dinner on board, the award ceremony takes place on the island in a pub, followed by a big party.

Sunday:
After breakfast and maybe a walk on the beach you sail back to Harlingen. In the afternoon you arrive in Harlingen and say goodbye to the group and skipper and crew.

“It is certainly a unique opportunity to experience the special atmosphere of a sailing competition with traditional sailing ships”
